Flat Friends Flatter Fashion – Autumn/Winter 2021

The start of Autumn is always a busy time for me as it is Breast Cancer Awareness month. So, Flat Friends takes priority in October…and then I have run out of words for social media by November! But now we are ready to get going with our Autumn/Winter blog, and member of the Flat Friends private Facebook group are always ready with amazing items to share!

This time a year is ‘Posh Frock time’ as Jenny would say! Jenny found this stunning dress for a bargain price at a local independent dress shop. Jenny has had a single mastectomy and this dress with gathered velvet fabric across the bust evens out any asymmetry between a real breast and a prosthesis. The diamante panel creates the illusion of a plunge neckline, and the gathers at the base of the neckline will hang well over the tummy area – always important if there is a big festive spread at your event!

Velvet Evening Dress

From evening wear to gig wear! Sally Anne is the Queen of Gigs and rocked this stunning Zara dress. Sally Anne says, “It’s a great length, has pockets, and a great bold pattern. It also has no darts.”

And here’s Sally Anne in her Nina Simone t-shirt for Radio 6 Music’s recent ‘T-shirt Day’. You may recognise Sally Anne if you’ve been watching the current series ‘Mary Berry Love to Cook’ – the Queen of Gigging met the Queen of Baking at the Homebaked community bakery!

Naomi styled this animal print dress from Tu at Sainsbury’s with a fitted Fat Face denim jacket – it perfectly creates the illusion of an hourglass shape. Naomi says, “For the first time since covid and cancer I went out out! Cocktails and dinner in Brighton with friends and my new dress and jacket got their first proper outing.”

Kerry cleverly spotted this top as a great fit for a uniboober – before she had even had her mastectomy! Kerry says, “Really pleased with this top I bought from Romans not long before my surgery. Picture is with no bra or softie – I don’t think anyone would notice. I’m 11 days post single mastectomy on my left side.”

Bold patterns are always a great choice. I love this Paul Smith dress Emma found in TK Maxx.

If you are as clever as Maria with a sewing machine then maybe you could have a go at making your own clothes! Maria says, “This is a great pattern – no darts and doesn;t take too long to make. It’s the Southbank sweater drees. I don’t think it’s obvious I have no foobs in!”

I haven’t bought many clothes this year (last year’s Outflat fundraiser made me vow to buy less for 12 months!) But I couldn’t resist this jumper by New Look in my local charity shop. It’s a couple of sizes larger than I wear so has a lovely slouch fit, it’s also super soft and has the perfect depth v-neck for my flat chest.

If you’re heading off for some well-earned winter sun you can’t go wrong with this gorgeous swimsuit from Cupshe. This one is modelled by a uniboober with no prosthesis in.
